4 Ways to Become Happier Right Now

Can You Control Your Happiness? Can You Instantly Become Happy?

Heck yes you can.

It may seem hard to believe because there is so much shit in this world that can cause anxiety and sadness but you can actually overcome these negative emotions instantly. How is this possible you ask? Well the answer is not tequilla, despite what some old Facebook posts would say. The awnser is through a change in your mindset and practice.

The reality is that we can’t always control what happens to us or our environment. However, what we can control is much more powerful. We can control our attitude and how we react to negativity.

We create our own happiness.

If you are currently feeling anxious or sad there are a few things you can do. If you are depressed I must post a disclaimer that I am not a doctor nor I am I fan of medication so I do not have advise for medically diagonised depression and you should consult a professional.

For those of you seeking to get happy quickly, and in a natural way, then you should try these four suggestions.

1. Create and State Affirmations Daily (Anytime of Day)

When you start to sense negative emotions or thoughts brewing say and repeat your personal affirmations. Affirmations are the action of stating facts (or what you want to become a reality). They should be positive statements regarding your attitude, your success, your character, and your desires. When said repeaditly they can change your thoughts, perspective, focus, and mood to happiness.

The power of affirmations lies in repeating them to yourself regularly. When you repeat them often, and believe in them, you can start to make positive changes. Beliefs are something that you say over and over again until you live by what you affirm (Source: MindTools.com).

It’s useful to recite your affirmations several times a day. You also need to repeat your affirmations as soon as you engage in the negative thought or behavior that you want to overcome.

Write out affirmations that you can say in the morning, in the car ride, on your breaks, etc… basically, anytime of the day.

An example of daily affirmations are:

I am happy

I am enough

I am worthy of ______

I am awesome because_______________

I make healthy choices

I am energized

I am loved

I am talented

I am grateful for ______________

I am in love with my life

I am excited for new opportunities the universe will send me

I am exactly where I am supposed to be

I am debt free

I am responsible

I am a good ______ (person, student, parent, partner, employee, friend, business owner, etc.)

I am open to positive changes in my life

2. Sing Outloud

Do you ever notice that when you are happy or excited… you hum or sing a song. It’s because you are filled with joy. In turn, when you are feeling blue, you can increase your joy by singing a HAPPY song. A happy song is key for obvious reasons.

It’s science. Singing releases endorphins, the feel-good chemicals in the brain. Because the deep breathing needed to sing draws more oxygen into the blood and causes better circulation, it’s also an aerobic activity and a natural stress-reducer.

If you are fearless (or cray cray) like me, you will shamelessly sing pretty much anywhere. I don’t have an amazing voice so I usually annoy people surrounding me OR best case scenario, I make them laugh which is awesome because now I have brighted someone else’s day with my entertaining singing. If you are a little bit on the shy side close your door room and sing softly. If you want to sing loudly, sit in your car, turn the radio on and go nuts. Bathrooms have amazing acostics BTW.

3. Count Your Small Wins

Sometimes people have tunnel vision and focus on the end results of large goals. Big goals can take a while to accomplish so in the interim, count your mini wins. Anything you can cross off a to do list is a win! I don’t subscribe to the culture of giving recognition for everything a person does such as a participation trophy. However, personal kudos and a pat on your own back is acceptable when you are knocking out small wins that are leading up to the BIG goal.

Professor Teresa Amabile and Steven Kramer wrote about “The Progress Principle” which highlights when people consistently take steps forward – even small steps – on meaningful projects, they are more creative, productive, and engaged, and they have better relationships. (Source: https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/progress-theory.htm)

When you have a goal, break down all the steps involved. Count each step accomplished as a mini win. When you don’t have a major goal set, make one up. Think about what has been on the back burner for sometime now, that you know you need to tackle. Break down the steps to that task and knock out one or two of the steps when you are feeling down. Crossing those little steps off your list should be an instant mood booster.

Lastly, you can simply reflect on all that you have done for the day or week and write down things that you consider small wins.

Example of My To Do List:

√ Say Affirmations in the Monrning

√ Go to Gym

√ Eat Healthy Breakfast

√ Pack Lunch (night before)

√ Call Mom to Say Hello

√ Pay Internet Bill

√ Book Tickets for Vacation

√ Smile When Boss ask Me to Do Something I Don’t Care For

√ Write Blog Post on How to Be Happy –

4. Make Someone Smile

When a situation has you feeling stressed or flustered, even the most forced of smiles can genuinely decrease your stress and make you happier (Source: “Grin and Bear It“).

According to a 2016 study published in the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences, as humans, pretty much all of our facial expressions can be contagious, including smiling. (Source: Elite Daily )

  1. Get in front of a mirror and smile. If the smile feels really forced, then make a funny face. The kind of funny face you used to make as a child. That is sure to get a genuine smile out of you.
  2. Walk around and smile at others because smiling is contagious.
  3. Think a happy thought. Recall some of your favorite memories and tap into those good feelings you had.
  4. If you are really stressed out, whip out your smart phone, go to YOUTUBE and search for something funny. Stand up comedy, SNL, MadTV, Comedy Central, etc. That always works for me.
  5. Google funny jokes.
