List of Organizations that Protect the Ocean

If the ocean had a Facebook profile page it’s status update would say…

And that is because the ocean is not in a good state. Of course whether you are reading “real news” or “fake news” the cause of it’s status will vary. Regardless of who or what is at fault the ocean needs to be protected. The ocean is a source of food for millions of people and animals/creatures around the world and an unhealthy ocean can endanger all those who rely on it as a food source or way of life. And let’s not forget how it will impact surfing. If nothing is done to sustain the ocean’s health, surfs will not have access to safe waters to shred.

There is hope however… There are many ocean-focused organizations that are fighting hard to protect it.


Here is a short list of some of the big organizations who’s mission is to protect the ocean and it’s inhabitants:

Surfrider Foundation – An international, grassroots-based organization. Their mission is the protection and enjoyment of oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network. They have specific initiatives on water quality, coastal preservation, beach access, and special place protection.


Ocean Conservancy – Their simple vision of fighting for a healthy ocean has led them to initiate projects such as the well-known International Coastal Cleanup, which enlists thousands of volunteers all over the U.S. each year to assist in clearing trash and other human debris from our beaches.


Reef Check Foundation – An international non-profit organization dedicated to conservation of two ecosystems: tropical coral reefs and California rocky reefs.


Sea Shepard Conversation Society – Founded in 1977, their mission is to “end the destruction of habitat and the slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species,” using direct-action tactics.


Mission Blue  under the organization ORCA is committed to protecting the ocean through marine conservation. Following the establishment of Mission Blue, a network of global philanthropists, including Glenn Close, Jean-Michel Cousteau, Jackson Browne, Leonardo DiCaprio (pledged over $16.7 million to the cause – enabling ORCA to continue their valuable work to an even higher level!


5 Gyres – A non-profit organization dedicated to researching plastic pollution in the world’s oceans, and actively promoting solutions. Their goal is to utilize first- hand knowledge to stop the flow of plastic pollution to our oceans.


Safina Center – Formerly Blue Ocean Institute,  this organization uniquely works through science, art, and literature to inspire solutions and a deeper connection with nature. They share reliable information that enlightens personal choices, instills hope, and helps restore living abundance in the ocean.


Oceana – Oceana is the largest international organization working solely to protect the world’s oceans. Oceana wins policy victories for the oceans using science-based campaigns.


One World One Ocean – The One World One Ocean Foundation works in collaboration with the One World One Ocean Campaign to engage people in their everyday lives, striving to encourage mindful consumption.


Plastic Pollution Coalition – A global alliance of individuals, organizations and businesses working together to stop plastic pollution and its toxic impacts on humans, animals and the environment. With its work, Plastic Pollution seeks to put plastic pollution at the forefront of global social, environmental and political discourse.
